The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) is currently investigating Cord leader Raila Odinga over incitement following allegations that he recently made remarks fueling hatred and animosity among Kenyans.
According to NCIC Chairman Francis Kaparo, the commission is after a number of prominent politicians who have in the recent past been making utterances of hatred and which could spark animosity between communities.
Speaking on Monday at the Sportsman Arms Hotel in Nanyuki after presenting certificates to peacekeepers, Kaparo said that they will not be intimidated by politicians of any rank and added that stern action will be taken against any of them in case they are found inciting Kenyans.
He added that Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago was also being investigated and that both Raila and Mandago would be brought to justice if found guilty.
“Whether Raila has a case to answer or not, each will carry his cross,” Mr Kaparo said of the two. “Both of them are under investigation and once we have enough evidence we will take the necessary action.”
Raila’s legal team has however reacted to the threats by Kaparo and dismissed the accusations as being politically motivated.
According to Nation, Odinga lawyer Paul Mwangi has said that neither he nor his client is aware of the investigations and accused Kaparo’s team of being led by political talk.
“We consider this is a politically-motivated report and was uttered on a political platform,” Mr Mwangi said.
Mwangi said that Odinga has never uttered any inciting words to Kenyans and referred to the reports about the hate investigation as “absolute balderdash”.
