Apparently, it was Raila's first visit to a region that has systematically opposed his politics in as many years since reconciling with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In unlikely turnout of events, the duo held a joint conference slightly over a month ago where they pledged to work together.

The famous handshake has seen Raila meet a host of delegations particularly from the populous Mt. Kenya region, with Moses Kuria's date being the most familiar one.

And at Murang'a, mourners rushed to receive Raila when he alighted from his Toyota Prado and the veteran leader was captured waving back to the enthusiastic crowd.

Some standing chanting pro-Raila's songs, temporarily disrupting events few meters away from the main dais.

Also attending the event are Raila's spouse Ida, President Uhuru Kenyatta, DP William Ruto and a host of dignitaries.

The iconic multiparty democracy hero will be cremated at a private function on Friday in Nairobi in compliance with his will.
