Dr Amolo was the former Provincial Medical Officer for Nyanza region and husband to the former Homabay County ODM chairperson Monica Amolo who lost her life in an accident last year.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, Raila expressed shocked at the untimely death of Dr Amolo who until his death was a medical practitioner at the Agha Khan Hospital in Kisumu.

“I wish to convey my heartfelt sympathies to the family of Dr Amolo at this moment of pain. I also express very sincere condolences to the many friends of the late medic and the people he served in different roles as a leading health worker in different parts of Kenya,” said Raila.

The former Premier described Dr Amolo as a trailblazer in his profession as a medic whose legacy lives on particularly in Nyanza region where he was committed in uplifting the lives of people through his profession as a medic as well as community service.

“Dr Amolo was a trendsetter in his profession whose legacy lives on particularly in Nyanza region. We mourn with the people of Kisumu and Nyanza in general where the he spent his last years of service,” he said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are particularly with the children who are now orphaned after the passing on of Mama Monica Amolo slightly over a year ago and who will need fortitude and courage to come to terms with their grief over this terrible death in the family,” Raila said.

He added: “It is our prayer that Dr Amolo’s spirit will remain a guiding force to the children left behind. I urge the bereaved family members to remain strong in the knowledge that we are holding them in our thoughts and prayers.”

On April 23, Dr Amolo paid a visit to his children in the family’s South C home in Bandari.

But his son, Junior Michael only known as DJ was not home. Only his two daughters were there to receive him when he arrived in the evening.

The following day, Sunday, the doctor woke up and joined his daughters for breakfast before requesting one of them to call DJ who was still asleep in his room.

According to police, the late Amolo wanted to know why DJ had skipped his exams.

He gently pressed the son for answers, which were reportedly not forthcoming. He is said to have demanded to know from DJ if he was ready to sit his exams, but the young man reportedly showed no interest.

“A dejected father stood up throwing his hands in the air while exclaiming, ‘I don’t know what I will do to this boy,’ as he walked towards the backyard of the house where the dog was barking from,” said a relative.

DJ meanwhile walked into the kitchen, picked a knife, followed his father along the corridor where he grabbed the old man from behind, floored him and then stabbed him repeatedly where he lost consciousness.

He also attempted to turn the knife on his sister.

Dr Amolo was admitted to the Mater Hospital in Nairobi where he was pronounced dead on Monday.
