Minutes after Deputy President William Ruto and Joshua Sang were acquitted of crimes against humanity charges by the International Criminal Court (ICC), Raila Odinga took to Twitter to congratulate the DP.
“As ODM, we congratulate @WilliamSRuto following the ruling of the court,” the opposition leader posted on Twitter.
Raila said ODM never planned violence that rocked the country in 2007/2008 after the disputed general elections.
Ruto was a key ODM leader at that time, and was named by the then ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo alongside six others, as those who orchestrated the chaos.
“ODM never planned, organised or perpetrated any violence against anybody,” Raila said.
Raila said there was need for the Kenyan government to compensate the victims of the 2007/2008 post-election violence.
“We now hope that the victims will receive long overdue justice in form of reparations from government,” he said.
ICC Trial Chamber on Tuesday evening declared that Ruto and Sang have no case to answer, after years of grueling trial at The Hague based court.
The two were accused of murder, deportation and persecution after over 1,000 people were killed in the 2007/2008 post poll skirmishes.
Over 500,000 others were displaced, while property worth millions of shillings were lost.
