The extremely low voter registration in Nyanza region has sent shockwaves in ODM, with party leader Raila Odinga accusing his point men of disloyalty, The Star is reporting.
Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi has revealed that Raila called him over the weekend and fumed over the low voter listing in the constituency as the February 14 deadline draws ever closer.
Wandayi confirmed Raila’s worries, stating that ODM officials and aspirants seem unenthusiastic about the vital drive, fears that he says will be a matter of life and death come August.
He accused the selfish local leaders of engaging in politics at funerals rather than mobilize voters.
“We will vet all aspirants based on the account of votes they brought in for Raila,” he was quoted by The Star as saying, noting that it is foolhardy for the aspirants to selfishly consolidate votes for themselves and not doing the same for Raila.
The ODM party official warned that aspirants will not be presented with certificates even if they win the nominations until they can demonstrate how many votes they mobilized for Raila’s presidential bid.
According to the IEBC, Nyanza and Western regions continue to lag behind in voter listing while the exercise has been highly successful in Jubilee zones.
