In a crisis that has escalated for the last five years, President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar met for the first time in as many years.

In May, Odinga met Kiir in Juba before flying to South Africa where he managed to bring on board Riek, whose forces have been attacking government controlled regions.

"I met Odinga and I am happy with the progress in bringing peace in South Sudan. I fully support his move," said Riek.

Similar remarks were echoed by President Kiir: "This is remarkable and as government, we shall support Raila's efforts."

And the meeting between the two leaders could be just but the beginning of ending a civil war that has led to death of thousands of people.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had proposed Raila Odinga as special envoy in South Sudan crisis after the unlikely handshake in March.
