Cord Principal Raila Odinga has faulted the recently released Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), saying the results were not a true representation of the performance.
In a statement to the media, Odinga questions why there were only 141 straight 'A’s in the results, and over 30,000 grade ‘E’.
Odinga joins Kenya National Union of Teachers in demanding for a recall and proper standardisation of the results, saying there must have been something wrong.
He further tasks the government to explain how only 15 percent of the 577,000 students who sat for last year’s exams attained the minimum grade required to join universities.
KNUT on the other hand faults the marking of the papers, saying it did not undergo the necessary normalization, standardization, moderation and cross-checking of marks.
The union also questions why the papers were hurriedly marked and the results released without proper consultation from all the stakeholders.
The results were released 10 days ago, with most Kenyans lauding the ministry of education and particularly Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for a speedy process.
In their defence, the CS and KNEC officials said they sealed loopholes that existed in the past years, which allowed for stealing of examination.
Raila now wants a commission of inquiry formed to audit the results, as well as punish those he says are culpable for the mass failure witnessed in the exams last year.
