Opposition leader Raila Odinga has not been barred from travelling to the United States, a top State Department official has said.

In an interview with The Nation, the official however said the US regrets Odinga’s withdrawal from the presidential race, but respects it.

Odinga, a National Super Alliance leader, said there was no need of taking part in a pre-determined poll.

The State Department official was responding to a query over reports that Odinga had been denied a visa to the US.

“It is our understanding that nothing prevents Raila Odinga from getting on a plane and flying to the United States,” said the official, as reported by nation.co.ke.

State House Director of Digital Communications Dennis Itumbi on Twitter claimed that the Nasa leader was denied a visa to the US, and instead opted to fly to UK.

Odinga is in London, where he is expected to give an address on Friday at Chatham House, Royal Institute of International Affairs.
