Opposition leader Raila Odinga says he is ready to pay the price for electoral justice after he is sworn in as president on Tuesday, January 30.
The National Super Alliance (Nasa) on Saturday maintained that the former prime minister will take the oath at Uhuru Park in Nairobi, despite the county government closing the recreation park for renovations.
While addressing his supporters in Homa Bay, Odinga said he is ready to die or be jailed for life.
He was accompanied by Nasa co-principals Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka, who will be sworn in as deputy president.
“If it will cost me my life or send me to jail for life, I am ready for it. My life is not better than that of baby Pendo or the more than 300 people who have died since the August 8 elections,” said Odinga.
“I am ready to pay the ultimate price,” Odinga said, adding that he is not afraid of threats to charge him with treason.
Attorney General Githu Muigai had warned the opposition against pushing on with the oath-taking, saying Odinga will be charged with treason, whose penalty is death.
The opposition leaders insisted that they won the August election, which was nullified by the Supreme Court on September 1, after they filed a petition.Odinga said time for dialogue is over.
“We gave a lot of time for the Jubilee Party leadership to participate in dialogue but they declined. Everybody in the world should now understand that their disobedience has now put this country into crossroads,” he said.
Mudavadi said NASA leaders have patiently waited for Jubilee to initiate dialogue in vain.
“We have slammed our brakes for too long. We have removed our foot from the brake pedal and we are now headed to Uhuru Park,” he said.
