The debate about whom National Super Alliance (NASA) can field to battle it out with President Uhuru Kenyatta seems not to end today. Cord leader Raila Amolo Odinga has won the hearts of many Kenyans for being a kingmaker but his stars have never shone bright enough to take him to the statehouse.
The former prime minister Raila is his own undoing. As much as the opposition leader is having an impressive record when it comes to the second liberation of this nation, the people around him have failed him on several occasions.
Recently, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) issued some of the aspirants including Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero and his Mombasa Counterpart with direct tickets claiming they had no opponents, which I want to categorically dispute. Runyenjes MP Cecil Mbarire and Fida among other groups have already expressed concern over the way the opposition have been treating women. This is likely to cost Raila in the forthcoming general polls even if he beats Kalonzo and others.
The opposition leader has also been mentioned among leaders who took part in the 1982 attempted coup against former President Daniel Torotich Arap Moi. The mentioning of the Cord leader in this coup has greatly affected his fight to rise to the nation’s top seat.
The Memorandum of Understanding between Wiper and ODM is still rocking NASA. Leaders from Ukambani no longer trust Raila with power.
On the other hand, Kalonzo has been considered the people's favorite Presidential candidate. Leaders from different parts of the nation have lauded Kalonzo for being incorruptible. The Ukambani political kingpin is considered the only leader who will end tribalism in this nation if he ascends to power. Mombasa Senator Omar Hassan has said that Kalonzo’s presidency will not tolerate forgery and other vices dragging this nation behind.
