According to the elders, those seeking to challenge Mr Odinga should prove that they have what it takes to beat Jubilee pair of Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

This comes barely a week after Raila made a statement that he is ready to back another candidate in 2017.

"Mr Odinga enjoys massive support in Nyanza, Western and Coast and it would only be fair to him if he is supported as the opposition candidate against Jubilee," council chairman Willis Otondi said as quoted by Nation.

Mr Otondi further confirmed that they are going to hold meetings with Luhya and Kisii elders to chart a way to support Odinga's fourth stab at the presidency.

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka are also interested to be Cord flag-bearers and they have asked for Odinga's backing saying they are best placed to defeat Kenyatta.
