Cord principal Raila Odinga has claimed that the Jubilee government is plotting to assassinate Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
Speaking on Thursday at Isebania Town in Migori, Raila said the threats have emerged due to the governor's sharp criticism of the government.
Raila warned there will be serious consequences if the plan is carried out.
He alleged that those behind the murder of Jacob Juma were the same people planning Joho's assassination.
“People who killed businessman Jacob Juma now want to eliminate Mr Joho because of his political stand.... let them try,” said Raila, as quoted by Nairobi News.
This comes after the governor's security detail was withdrawn, a move analysts have termed as political, considering it occurred shortly after Joho publicly accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of hijacking Mombasa projects.
Joho later rejected the security guards after they were reinstated, saying they were sent to spy on him and plant illegal substances in his residence.
Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki has, however, dismissed the assassination claims, adding that the governor should launch a formal complaint instead of speaking about the issue in public.
“The government’s priority is not to plan how to execute politicians, but to ensure all citizens and their property are safeguarded,” said Achoki.
