A Nyamira MCA believes Cord leader Raila Odinga committed ‘no mistake’ when he issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to release detained legislators allied to his coalition.
Mr Odinga on Thursday said there would be unspecified consequences if MPs Junet Mohammed (Suna East), Timothy Bosire (Kitutu Masaba), woman reps Florence Mutua (Busia), Aisha Juma (Kilifi) and Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama are not released.
And now Mr Ezra Mochiemo of Magombo ward says the legislators were unlawfully detained and their rights allegedly violated since the alleged hate speech was available in the media.
“Basically I think former Prime Minister is very right to demand the immediate release of the five legislators because the detention in police cells is unlawful. The alleged hate speech is in public domain so I don’t expect the police to conduct any investigations as they are purporting so the (former) Prime Minister made no mistake,” Mochiemo said.
“Furthermore, it’s an infringement of an accused person’s rights for holding him or her in a cell longer than the specified duration in the constitution. I fully support Mr Odinga and as the Opposition, we are ready to be part of the next course of action,” he added.
He accused the government of being ‘biased’ in handling the hate speech allegations and warned of a revolution that could lead to crumbling of Jubilee government.
“Every Kenyan knows the people who made the unacceptable remarks and when we as the Opposition are responding, our MPs are told to record statements and get arrested for basically doing nothing wrong,” Mochiemo added.
