Following the popular handshake between Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta last month, there has been simmering debate over the former Prime Minister's political future.

With reports that Raila may retire from active politics, a number of politicians have been mentioned as potential successors of Raila, who enjoys massive support in Nyanza region.

According to former Rangwe Member of Parliament Dr Shem Ochuodho, there are only four people who qualify to take over from Raila as Luo political kingpin.

In an interview with a local daily, Ochuodho named Siaya Senator James Orengo, Rongo legislator Dalmas Otieno, former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and himself as possible successors.

"The position needs fresh blood who can propel the community to the next level, and I believe the community will identify such a leader," the former MP said, speaking to Sunday Nation.

However, some leaders have trashed the Raila succession debate, insisting he is not done in his fight for a better Kenya.

"Raila is busy fighting electoral injustice and other evils bedevilling the country and some people are busy discussing his succession," said Suba North legislator John Mbabi.

Mbadi also serves as the Chairman of Raila's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
