NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga on Friday said his government, if he wins Tuesday’s election will construct a bridge linking Likoni and Mombasa Island.
He termed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government’s decision to buy a new ferry to operate between Mombasa Island and Likoni as ‘rubbish’.“I hear Uhuru will be coming here tomorrow (Saturday) to launch a ferry,” he said.“If I was Uhuru I would be coming to launch a bridge. That ferry is rubbish. We will construct a 50-metre bridge. It will be high to allow ships to pass below it.”Two ferries operating at the Likoni channel have broken down several times hampering business operations in the two towns.Transport cabinet secretary James Macharia on Thursday received the first of the two new ferries christened MV Jambo. The ferry is set to be launched today (Saturday) by President Uhuru Kenyatta.Raila said the only solution to end congestion at the Likoni channel is to build a bridge.Mombasa residents have endured recurrent breakdowns of the old ferries and have been calling on the government to construct a bridge at the channel instead.
