[Photo|Raila Odinga]NASA leader Raila Odinga has raised his voice after the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA-K) issued a directive to all media houses asking them to stop covering live political events. In a letter sent to media houses dated November 17, 2017, CA-K Director General Eng Francis Wangusi asked media houses to be responsible while broadcasting political events, citing the political event that was ongoing same day.“This is further to earlier engagements the authority has had with the broadcasters to remind them of their obligations in respect to the responsible use of broadcasting platforms,” the letter read in part.On the same day, Odinga was returning from his 10-day US trip but police disrupted his welcoming causing chaos and death of five, injuring several others and destruction of property."As we come out of the electioneering period, the Authority requires media houses to avoid airing content that can create hatred and incitement hence threatening peace and cohesion in the country."The letter further urged media houses to stop covering the event but the broadcasters ignored."In this regard, the authority directs broadcasters to cease airing live coverage of political events that are taking place today with immediate effect," CA-K warned.Speaking on Saturday, Odinga criticised the Jubilee administration saying the ban infringes media freedom."Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime yesterday also struck a blow at the free media. Our media is now forbidden from providing live coverage of political events!" he said."The last time this happened was when a rigged outcome of the 2007 election was about to be perpetrated," added the opposition leader.
