Prior to the 2002 General Election, Raila found himself faced with a dilemma at Uhuru Park.
Raila later wrote in his memoirs thus "well that even if he gave the assembled leaders 100 years, we would never come to a consensus."
Raila, being the undisputed political enigma that he has always been, took advantage of the ecstatic mammoth ground and announced is now famous “Kibaki Tosha” declaration and things were never the same from then on.
In 2007, the script and the cast were different.
ODM converged at the Kasarani amphitheater and conducted elections for their Party’s presidential candidates.ODM had an electoral process involving delegates, and Raila emerged a clear winner.
Raila’s uncontested win clearly solidified ODM, a party that was formed out of the remnants of Kanu, NDP, LDP and many others. Thus, ODM became one single party.
Lately, Amani National Congress (ANC) leader has been sending mixed signals and he has claimed that he is ready to work with Raila; that has made pundits to think that there might be another “Musalia Tosha” in 2013 just the way there was Kibaki Tosha in 2002.
Deputy President William Ruto has been mocking Cord over their indecision in naming their presidential candidate.
Members of the three parties forming Cord coalition have been piling pressure on the co-principals to make up their collective minds and name their presidential flag-bearer.
Kalonzo and Wetangula’s have ganged up to push Raila to honour the December 4, 2012, pre-election pact that named Raila as the coalition’s presidential flag-bearer in 2013. The MoU named Kalonzo and Wetangula as presidential candidates respectively. The duo and their supporters have stood their ground that it is now Raila’s turn to return the favour.
If Kalonzo and Wetangula’s wishes are granted then Raila will have no option but to play king-maker just like he has done in the past.
