Coalition for Reforms and Democracy leader Raila Odinga on Saturday skipped former first lady Lucy Kibaki's burial ceremony in Othaya, Nyeri.
The opposition chief, as the burial event unfolded, was in Ildamat village, Kajiado County officiating at the thanksgiving ceremony for Kajiado Central MP Elijah Memusi.
The late Lucy Kibaki was wife to former President Mwaki Kibaki who served when Raila was Prime Minister.
Pictures of the seat that had been reserved for Raila made rounds on social media as it remained unoccupied for the entire event attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.
The seat had been reserved at the VIP section, an indication he had been expected to attend.
He was however, at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands on Wednesday during the former first lady's requiem mass.
From the Cord coalition, the only notable figure present in Othaya was Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya who did not get the opportunity to speak.
Also conspicuously absent at Mr Kibaki's home were Cord Co-Principals Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya).
The two attended a burial ceremony for the late Charles Mutui, a former councillor and Wiper activist in Mivukoni, Mwingi North constituency, Kitui County.
In Kajiado, Raila was welcomed by jubilant supporters as he arrived at Ildamat.
He used the occasion to criticise government over a proposed amendment to the Constitution seeking to transfer some powers bestowed to the office of the chairman National Land Commission to the Lands Cabinet Secretary.
"I expressed our collective solidarity with the issues pertinent to the residents of the county including land ownership, management of county natural resources and inclusivity in governance," Raila said on his official Facebook account.
"Of particular interest is the land question with the recent Community Land Bill proposed by Jubilee that would strip the National Land Commission of oversight on community land and place those powers in the office of the Cabinet Secretary for Lands."
"We believe such a move is retrogressive and rolls back the gains in transparent management of public land."
Mr Memusi won the Kajiado Central by-election beating Jubilee's Patrick Tutui after then MP Joseph Nkaissery was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government.
