Speaking in Bondo on Saturday, Mr Odinga said that it was premature to criss-cross the country to drum up support ahead of 2022.

"Instead of moving around the country, telling us that you want to be the president, telling us who is supporting you, you should be working for the people. It is too early for that. The time for 2022 politics will come," he said.

Even though he did not mention the deputy president, it was clear who he was talking about.

His strong words come in the context of campaigns aimed at propping Deputy President William Ruto's presidential bid.

Odinga also sought to clarify that his dramatic handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta was not about 2022 presidential  politics but about bringing the country together.
