National Super Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga has said he has no plans of censuring his supporters who spew hatred on social media. When asked whether he was planning to rein in some of his supporters who are propagating hatred through his Twitter handle, the former prime minister said he had no intentions whatsoever to take actions against the perpetrators and wondered why anybody would try to gag a free communication platform.
"Social media is a free space where people air their views and no one should be gagged. I don't intend to censure anyone who comments on my social media accounts. Let them air their views," he said.Raila was speaking during a presidential debate event at the Catholic University Monday. With barely two weeks before the country heads to the ballot, social media has become the new battleground with users across the political divide engaging in bitter exchanges some of which border on hate speech, vilification and outright incitement.Just a week ago, security agencies in the country put on the spot administrators of various Facebook pages and Whatsapp groups whom they accused of condoning the vice.
