Mr Odinga said that his dramatic move to shake hands with his political arch-nemesis Uhuru Kenyatta was preceded by days of soul-searching.

''We had done a soul-search about what is wrong with project Kenya and how can it people resolved for the good of the future generations of our people. We identified where the rain started to beat us and agreed that a solution needed to be found. We said that were on the precipice and also that we had the opportunity to pull the country from the precipice,'' he told Julian Marshal.

Raila is currently in the U.K where is expected to address issues around the handshake and meet Kenyans in the diaspora.

In the interview, he bemoaned the ethnic divisions and animosity in the country, saying that there was a strong need to have them addressed so that the country could move forward united.

The handshake has been hailed by a cross-section of Kenyans as necessary to solve the divisions that have plagued the country for decades.
