National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga has said his government will cross examine the risks surrounding the Lamu coal project before approving it once he takes over power.

Speaking during the Presidential debate at Catholic University on Monday, Raila said his government will cancel the project if it is proven to be a deathbed."Of course we will not accept it if the project, which environmental experts term doom-laden, is going to destroy or interfere with the environment," said Raila. The former Prime Minister, who is taking a fourth stab at the presidency, said if the project will generate clean coal, it will be implemented without any opposition."There is what is called clean coal as opposed to just ordinary coal. That is an issue that should be looked at more comprehensively, not emotionally,” he added. The coal project was launched in 2013, and is expected to generate 5,000MW of power to the national grid upon completion. The project has been opposed by a section a leaders in Lamu led by county Women Rep Shakilla Abdalla, who feel it poses a risk to the health of residents.
