National Super Alliance (NASA) Presidential candidate, Raila Amolo Odinga quest to rise to power has been dealt a major setback after members of parliament passed controversial Election Laws amendment bill.
According to Tuko.co.ke, the lawmakers argue that they passed the bill in order to close all the possible loopholes that can lead to the nullification of any other election following what transpired in the August exercise.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) has now been given the mandate to declare the remaining candidate President if his competitors pull out of the race.
Baringo Member of Parliament, William Cheptumo asked both the opposition and ruling party to embrace the new bill arguing that nullification of a Presidential election is not going to be used by leaders who want to rise to power through backdoor means.
“Where there is a discrepancy between the electronically transmitted and the physically delivered results, the commission shall verify the results and the result which is an accurate record of the results tallied, verified and declared at the respective polling station shall prevail,” he said, as quoted by the Local Daily.
The passing of the bill comes after leaders of the opposition raised the alarm that Jubilee was hatching a plot to ensure President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto remain in power through unconstitutional means after the announcement of a run.
