ODM party leader Raila Odinga on Friday took the fight against graft to President Uhuru Kenyatta's doorstep when he asked the Commander in Chief to take personal responsibility for the loss of Sh5.3 billion at the Health Ministry.
Raila made the remark when it emerged that the President's sister and cousin were among individuals who pocketed millions of shillings in the 'HealthGate' scandal.
The opposition chief who addressed a press conference at his Capitol Hill office in Nairobi blamed the President for the spiraling corruption threatening economic growth.
On Friday, it was revealed Uhuru's sister, Nyokabi Kenyatta and cousin Kathleen Kihanya were directors of a company that pocketed Sh41 million in questionable payouts at the Health Ministry.
The two own Sundales International Ltd that was registered on September 12, 2013.
It also emerged that their company had been awarded government contracts running into hundreds of millions of shillings.
Recently, Uhuru acknowledged that fighting graft had proved difficult for him.
"If there is one issue that has frustrated me, it’s this issue [corruption] ...because the pressure is on me. Show me one administration, since independence that has taken action on corruption like I have done?" Uhuru protested on October 19, as he addressed a State House summit on accountability.
Although he says he has done enough to fight graft, Raila maintains the President has no will to end the vise that has led to the lose of billions of taxpayers money.
Some of the scandals the country has suffered since Uhuru took over power in 2013 include the over Sh700 million National Youth Service saga, the Standard Guage Railway line scandal and the over Sh200 billion Eurobond saga.
