Opposition Leader Raila Odinga has reignited the debate on Eurobond saga by claiming taxpayers will have to pay for a debt that was 'stolen' by the Jubilee government.
The former Prime Minister said taxpayers will be required to pay Sh17.8 billion in interest payments on the Eurobond loan in the current financial year.
He said this is the biggest single interest on a loan currently being serviced by the government.
“Right now, Kenyans are being lied to and every Kenyan has a debt of Sh85,000 for money that did not get into the country," claimed Raila on Tuesday. Odinga has always maintained that a big percentage of the money from the bond proceedings never reached Kenya but was stolen by President Kenyatta and his allies in government.
“Even the Auditor-General himself has admitted that he has not seen the Eurobond funds ,” said Odinga.
However, IMF first deputy managing director David Lipton, said Kenya accounted for the Eurobond money in the same manner that other countries do.
“This is same method used by other countries that raise money in that manner,” said Lipton in June. The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and the National Treasury have also insisted that the money was received and spent on various projects.
