The former Prime Minister said the government has neglected the youth who are a majority in the country by not creating employment opportunities to empower them economically.

Speaking during a youth summit dubbed Kikao and organised by the County Government of Kisii, Raila said his coalition has a clear road map for problems facing the ever increasing number of youths in the country.

"It is high time for the youth in this country to reject selfish leaders and vote in leaders who would bring entrepreneurship and innovation closer to them.

The Cord government will address the challenges facing our youth in real time," he said.

He said that unless the interventions were implemented, youths who formed the bulk of the population will be tempted to engage in anti-social vices.

"My government will create 800,000 jobs every year to ensure the youth are empowered economically thus preventing them from engaging in vices such as terrorism, crime and drugs," he added.

Raila further said that youths eligible for voting should ensure they obtain their national identity cards for participation in next year’s general elections.

The country has had bad levels of unemployment with the hardest hit areas being youths living in slum areas of major urban centres including Nairobi's Kibera and Mathare slums.
