Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) leader Raila Odinga has maintained that their Madaraka Day rally at Uhuru Park will go on as planned.
Speaking on Saturday in Mombasa during the official commissioning of the Governor's Bursaries Award initiated by the Mombasa County government, Raila said they will not call off the rally.
“We will hold our rally on Wednesday at Uhuru Park as planned whether they like it or not,” said Ralia.
This comes after police gave a different statement claiming that the venue had earlier been booked by Prayers Beyond Boundaries Ministries Bishop Lucy Ngunjiri, who plans to hold a prayer rally at the venue.
Raila's sentiments were echoed by Siaya Senator James Orengo who said they had received a go ahead from the county government.
“It is only the county government that can give out property or grounds like Uhuru Park, which are part of their assets. I think the police were trying to confuse everybody that some other people had been given that particular ground for celebrations or for services,” said Orengo.
Orengo further accused a section of Jubilee leaders of being behind the confusion.
"We think that it is people in Jubilee, having heard that we are going to have a meeting there, who were trying to create this confusion,” said the senator.
Cord reaffirmed that the Uhuru Park rally will be peaceful and asked Kenyans to show up in large numbers.
