The National Super Alliance (NASA) has waded into Meru gubernatorial race politics.
On Saturday, NASA co-principal Moses Wetang’ula announced the opposition’s preferred candidate in the contest between Governor Peter Munya and Senator Kiraitu Murungi.
In a rally that was also attended by the NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga, Wetang’ula revealed that the opposition alliance was backing the re-election of the incumbent Governor Munya.
"I am sending you with greetings to my learned friend Governor Munya. He is hardworking and is leading in the struggle to liberate this country. We are saying Kiraitu out and Munya in," Wetang'ula said as quoted by Sunday Nation.
“Kiraitu has lost the way to prosperity after leading you to the lost destination,” he told residents in Maua town.
The leaders drummed support for Munya despite them being accompanied by the Wiper gubernatorial candidate in Meru, Winnie Kaburu.
Raila lauded the former Council of Governors chair for travelling to Somaliland to negotiate for the miraa market after the London ban.
“As you put Raila up there also remember Munya,” Raila said pledging to cushion miraa farmers against losses and negotiate for international markets if elected in August.
Governor Munya has been fighting accusations from Jubilee leaders in the region who have labelled him a NASA mole.
He has however dismissed the allegations insisting he is backing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election in the forthcoming general election.
Munya will face off Kiraitu (Jubilee), Kaburu (Wiper) and former assistant minister Kilemi Mwiria of Maendeleo Chap Chap.
