Addressing supporters at the Kisumu Sports Stadium on Wednesday, Raila said the failure of the biometric kits is a ploy to justify Jubilee's push for manual backup in this year's polls.

The former Prime Minister warned IEBC officials against tampering with the kits as the exercise entered its third day.

"I would like the electoral commission to ensure all kits assigned to register new voters are in good working condition for the next 26 days," said Raila. The opposition leader said it is democratic right of every Kenyan to be able to register as a voter without any challenge.

"We don't want to discriminate any Kenyan. My desire is to ensure that everyone is enabled to vote," he said.

The opposition has been calling for electronic voting system in August 8 polls but the government passed a law allowing manual backup in case electronic system fail.

However, speaking on status of the mass voter registration that kicked off on Monday, IEBC Chief Executive Ezra Chiloba said the biometric kits have performed as per expectations.

Chiloba said only 68 cases of faulty kits have been reported out of 7,793 kits dispatched. The electoral body CEO also said roughly 82,000 Kenyans have newly been registered in the last two days.
