Nakuru County women rep Mary Mbugua has slammed the Coalition for Reform and Democracy for staging protests against the IEBC terming them as “a government in waiting”.
Mbugua who spoke on Tuesday in Nakuru said that it was wrong for the opposition, which literally is a government in waiting, to abuse sovereignty of the people to illegally push for removal of IEBC commissioners which is a constitutional institution governed by laws.
“It's very wrong for a government in waiting to hold demonstrations against a legally constituted commission where other avenues could have worked. There are so many peaceful avenues that could work like the parliament and the court. It is also a misinterpretation of constitution to use people in demonstrating saying that they hold sovereign power,” she said.
Mbugua added that in the whole IEBC saga, Cord leaders have put security of Kenyans in jeopardy.
She said the demonstrations were likely to hurt scores in different ways including business people who have lost much as they have had to remain closed.
She has joined in the call by other leaders asking opposition to use legally established channels to articulate their grievances and not protest.
In a press conference held by IEBC on Saturday, Chairman Isaac Hassan said that they will not be coerced to leave office by the protest; only if tangible evidence of their non-suitability to hold office will make them step down.
