In the history of Luo Nyanza politics today, three politicians stand out as the best of their generation and their relationship dating over 30 years has enabled them conquer the region's political scene.
With NASA leader Raila Odinga slightly ahead, Siaya Senator James Orengo and Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong'o as his diehard followers and trusted allies, the trio has been highflying.
Both Raila and Nyong'o are 73 years old and Orengo is 67. Literally, they are almost at the sunset days of their illustrious political career. However, the Kisumu Governor and Senator Orengo have long been viewed as Raila's successors at the helm of the county's political leadership. But Raila's recent moves suggest otherwise.
Is Raila trying to build a group of young politicians to take over from him in case he hangs his boots? Probably yes. At least his recent moves suggest so.
The former Prime Minister has engaged youthful MPs in his recent high profile political activities like the Harambee House handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta where he was accompanied by Suna East MP Junet Mohammed.
Further, when he recently visited South Sudan to broker a peace deal between President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar, Junet was conspicuously present. That would be followed with another meeting with European Union envoys to Kenya. And again, Junet was present.
A fortnight ago, when the ODM leader visited Uk, he was accompanied by Nyando MP Jared Okello. So does this mean? Gone are the days when Orengo and Nyong'o were automatically in every Raila meeting. Is " Baba" pursuing a new mission that could disappoint his longtime allies?
