A technical committee appointed by NASA to prepare opposition leader Raila Odinga’s ‘swearing-in’ will on Sunday divulge details of the event that the government has already said amounts to treason.
The committee will tomorrow address a press conference at the Okoa Kenya headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi and give an elaborate plan of how the event will be conducted.
The venue, however, will remain a secret until the day of the actual ‘oath-taking’.
NASA insists it will ‘swear-in’ Raila as President as the opposition coalition does not recognise President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.
NASA alleges Uhuru lacks the legitimacy of leading the country following a massive boycott of the repeat election on October 26. Raila did not take part in the poll.
The former Langata MP would have ‘taken an oath’ on December 12 during celebrations to mark Jamhuri Day but the occasion was postponed since his running mate and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka way away in Germany where he is attending to his wife who is in hospital.
The coalition said it would set a new date for the event.
The government has warned the organizers of the ceremony that they risk being arrested and charged with treason.
Attorney-General Githu Muigai warned Raila that he faces the death penalty should he be sworn in as “people’s president”, and at the same time chided top lawyers in the opposition for misleading the former Prime Minister to take an “illegal” oath.
But Raila on Tuesday said he was ready to die in his bid to liberate the country from what he called 'dictatorial leadership'.
"They should stop trying to intimidate me about treason. I am ready to be sworn in and die. We will be sworn in, let them do whatever they want," Raila vowed.
