President Uhuru Kenyatta has told off Opposition Leader Raila Odinga over his recent quest to meet Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) governor over the Eurobond.
Uhuru said the country will not sacrifice the credibility of its institutions just to pacify Raila and stop his tantrums.
CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge Thursday declined to meet Raila, saying “the information and documents held by the CBK in relation to the Eurobond are privileged under the banking laws, and therefore cannot be disclosed to third parties.”
“Cord Leader Raila Odinga was requested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to provide information and voice his concerns. He rudely rejected the invitation.”
“He was again invited by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, who published all relevant documentation on the ministry website, and again, Odinga rebuffed the invitation,” read in part a statement by Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU) Senior Director Messaging Eric Ng'eno Thursday evening.
Ng'eno said the invitation by Treasury which Raila declined to honour was intended to serve the purpose which he required of the CBK governor.
He said it is now clear that Raila is not interested in facts, information, data or documents on the Eurobond money because he has publicly refused to receive them.
“Raila craves confrontation, farce and crass spectacle, which he obsessively stages to garner attention. An unfortunate effect of Odinga’s crude politics is the undermining of important public institutions.”
Raila in January named Treasury CS Henry Rotich, Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua, Treasury PS Kamau Thugge and former CBK Governor Njuguna Ndung'u as "persons of interest" in the Eurobond saga.
Also in the list were Central Bank chairman Jairus Nyaoga and Accountant General Bernard Ndung'u. They all denied involvement.
EACC said it found no evidence linking the government officials to the disappearance of the money.
