Sarang’ombe village elder Maureen Agola has urged parents in Kibera to keep their children warm to avoid them getting sick.

Mrs Agola said the rainy season is always unfavourable to all people but mostly affects young children under the age of six.

"Children are not like grownups. They will want to play at every point at any given time. As a parent, one should not restrict the child from playing but rather protect him/her from the cold," she said.

She added that all parents should buy warm clothing for their school-going children to help them to keep warm even in school.

"Guardians and parents should be observant. They should be able to monitor the health of their school-going children. Sometimes they tend to think the children are safe with the teachers and forget to clothe them warmly. This is exposing a child to diseases such as pneumonia," she added.

She, however, appealed to the teachers to let the children put on warmly during the rainy season.

"It is something that teachers understand; they should give these children room to clothe warmly. Even if they will break the school rules of putting on a school uniform but jackets can be good for them to keep them warm. This is not included in a school uniform but is important for their health,’’ concluded Agola.
