Tomato sellers in Makina market, Kibera are counting losses due to decay of their stock arising from bad weather.

Speaking to this writer on Wednesday afternoon, the business people said they are making losses due to the ongoing rains that have been pounding the city.

Halima Sitati said her tomatoes go bad due to the cold while some are eaten by insects.

"When the insect bites the tomato, it leaves some black spots and also sucks the juice thus affecting its appeal to the customers. This has really affected my business," complained Halima.

Christine Mbaya also said the lack of sheds is to blame as they lack storage space.

"We are experiencing a shortage of tomatoes but also, the hygienic conditions and lack of sheds to ensure proper storage has contributed to the decay. It is a rainy season and sometimes they are rained thus affecting their durability."
