Nominated senator Martha Wangari now says that the president and his deputy are not responsible for increasing their salaries.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Friday, the senator confirmed that it was the duty of the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to determine the increase of salaries and welcomed the move to increase the president and his deputy's salaries.
"Even us as parliamentarians we do not set our own salaries, in fact the only thing we lost in is being able to set our own salaries and this is good for the public. It is the work of SRC to review the presidents pay, it happens in every civil service department," she said.
"Hiking the president and his deputy's salary is nothing out of the ordinary, it is normal for any government worker to start on a lower scale and receive a salary increment along the way," she added.
The Gilgil MP hopeful also criticized the move of the of doctors to claim a pay rise just because others were paid better and urged them to peg their demands for a pay rise on other issues.
"The reason I don't agree with the doctors strike to have their salary increased is because they want their salary increased because other people are receiving a better salary than them. Every job has its own parameters to determine how much you are paid," she said.
"You can not go around saying MCA's should not be paid more than doctors, it does not work that way. We are in a free world if you feel MCA's are paid more then you can run for the positions," she added.
