Cord leader Raila Odinga should use his weekly public rallies to sensitise supporters from his strongholds to register as voters, says political scientist Gideon Mamboleo.
Raila has been traversing the country and rarely goes without having a public rally across the country, with his ongoing tour in western Kenya being part of a series of rallies he has attended in recently.
And now Mamboleo, a political and communication lecturer at the University of Eldoret, contends that the rallies would be important if he turns them into avenues to rally his supporters to register as voters.
“The voting bloc in the country is well known and at least all the presidential aspirants have zoned certain areas ahead of the 2017 polls,” he said.
“The opposition should use its rallies to sensitise people from its strongholds to register as voters. Many of these regions record a small number of registered voters and the information are even available in the official IEBC website,” he added.
He said the strategy would help the opposition counter the tyranny of numbers from the government side should they think of giving government a significant challenge.
“Elections are about numbers and that is something we cannot deny. The government strongholds are numerically strong and if the opposition wants a reel challenge, it’s upon them to use the public rallies to sensitise people about voter registration especially in areas that have traditionally supported them,” he said.
