One of the counties where Kenyans should expect a tight contest for the seat of governor is Kisumu.
Reason? The contest has attracted some of Kenya's most seasoned politicians.
Incumbent Jack Ranguma will be seeking to defend his seat while Senator Prof Anyang Nyong'o will plunge into the county politics in an attempt to oust Mr Ranguma.
Others expected to join the race are businessman Hezron McObewa and Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga who is ODM leader Raila Odinga's sister.
However, the focus, now, is on two politicians- Mr Ranguma and Prof Nyong'o.
The ODM party primary elections will be a mega test for the party in Kisumu.
Both Ranguma and Nyong'o are close associates of Mr Odinga and the Cord leader will have a hard time deciding on who to axe between the two.
Ranguma has been governor for close to five years and will be expected to ride on his development record to convince residents of the county to vote for him.
Nyong'o on the other hand, going by the recent developments at the Senate has ably represented the people of Kisumu at the Upper House and has every reason to convince voters and get elected as governor.
Nyong'o is also riding on the fact that he has been in politics for a long time -elevated to ODM Secretary General at one time and this may work to his advantage.
The two leaders have been at loggerheads for the last close to one year- outdoing each other as they popularise their candidature for the seat of governor.
Ranguma in one of the events in Nyando late 2016, was forced to abandon a ceremony when rowdy youth shouted him down.
He blamed Nyong'o for the development he described as 'backward'.
But despite this pull and push between the two, the breaking point will be during the ODM party primaries.
The candidate who will be issued with the ODM certificate will be Kisumu's governor between 2017 and 2022.
