Kisumu Members of County Assembly have petitioned the county government to supply public schools in the county with clean and treated drinking water.
Speaking to this writer today, nominated MCA Lydia Odhiambo asked the county government to provide free drinking water in public schools to reduece the risk of contracting waterborne diseases and infections from dirty water.
“It is so unfortunate that our public schools do not have drinking water that is treated and this really affects the children. In some schools, there is no water at all and this is really a big disappointment to pupils especially in the hot afternoon,”said Odhiambo.
Nominated MCA representing persons living with disabilities (PWD) Caroline Agwanda added that giving clean water to schools will also save young children from contracting polio and dysentery.
Agwanda asked the county's health CeC to ensure that schools are provided with clean water that will enable the pupils to learn in a conducive environment.
“It is generally very hot in the afternoons and that affects the concentration of the pupils. This is why we should provide the schools with treated drinking water.”
