This followed declaration by the Kano Council of Elders that the body will back incumbent Jack Ranguma.

Mr Ranguma is expected to face tight competition from Senator Anyang Nyong'o, Dr Hezron Mc'Obewa and Asaka Nyangarar.

There are also claims that Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga is also in the race.

The council, led by Ogalo Akonde said the governor stands a high chance of defending his seat.

The declaration was made on Friday during the launch of a water project at Nyang'ande.

Mr Ogalo said Ranguma is a neutral leader with the capacity to unite the people of Kisumu.

"We, the Kabonyo Council of Elders have said in unison that we will support the current governor to retain his seat in next year's general elections," he said.

Kisumu is one of the counties where the race for the gabanatorial seat is expected to be tight.
