On Tuesday, five nursery school pupils from Awasi AIC nursery were hit and killed on the spot by a speeding car.

The children were walking home along the pedestrian pathway when the car veered off and hit them.

Mr Ranguma expressed his grief and sorry to the families of the victims.

"I pass my condolence message to the families of the children who died in the tragic accident at Awasi," Ranguma said in a statement to the media.

The governor also challenged traffic officers to mean seriousness in their work to streamline transport along the roads.

He said the officers should stop taking bribes and ensure people are safe on the roads.

Ranguma also expressed disappointment with yesterday's event saying "we've come from far and such accidents should be a thing of the past."

Two of the pupils were seriously injured and were taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital in Kisumu.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital's mortuary.

Nyando OCPD Elias Gitonga said the driver of the van, Yegon Cheruiyot, was in their custody and will be arraigned in court with charges of causing deaths by dangerous driving.
