A sombre mood engulfed Kang’enga village, Gatundu South in Kiambu County as Doris Muthoni Maina was finally laid to rest.
The university student was stabbed in the stomach early this week by a 21 year old man in a botched rape attempt. Maina was treated and discharged but later developed complications and succumbed to the injuries at Gatundu hospital.
The attacker has since been arrested.
The funeral, which had been attended by local leaders led by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, brought the realities of gender violence, especially rape and the extent the heinous act can go towards denying the society some important and promising elements.
The leaders condemned the act and asked the members of the public to help the authorities identify criminals of such acts living among them. The leaders said this will help authorities isolate the criminals at the earliest time possible before they commit such evils.
They blamed drugs as a major contributor of such vices.
“We are especially requesting parents and the police to help us reduce drug usage by our children and youths. This will enable us avoid the kind of damage they are causing to them after they use these drugs,” said Kuria.
The leaders also asked the courts to ensure that justice is done and the culprit dealt with accordingly to serve as a lesson to the others with such intentions.
