A rape suspect set free a fortnight ago by a Kisii Court is allegedly giving residents at Nyangongo area, Kisii town many sleepless a night.
The male suspect, 30, was seized mid-December last year after he had allegedly defiled and murdered a 13 year orphan while on an errand to buy milk.
The minor’s lifeless body was discovered at a thicket near the river in the wee hours of the morning by a man searching grass for his cattle.
The deceased orphan was in class four at Nyangongo Primary before she met the cruel hand of death.
Days ago, the man police had seized as the prime suspect is now a free man and villagers have raised alarm regarding the safety of their young ones after the authorities were set free.
Led by John Ombori the residents said the same ‘beast’ has already waylaid a young girl heading to school for preps.
"We are now living in fear and no longer trust the Courts if such suspects are let loose on to cause havoc on our children. If this persists the residents my take the law into their own hands to protect their children from harm coming on their way,” Mr Ombori said.
On Thursday, activists in the County also weighed in and called for investigation into the incident.
"We want the suspect to be arrested and justice be seen to be done otherwise he will be committing the same vice if action is not take," Tomson Osoro, Rigena Human Rights Activist said.
Mr Osoro cases of rape have been on the rise and urged the government to act fast.
"We note with great concern some rape and defilement cases are not reported because the offenders either bribe the victims or they engage in reconciliation but this should not happen as it leaves the suspects to commit the incident all over again,” he said.
Kisii County Commander of Police Agnes Mudambi said they are looking into the issue.
She however hinted that the problem lies in prosecution than the security agencies.
