Police in Rarieda sub-county are investigating an alleged murder of a 17-year-old student in Nyamasore village on Wednesday night.

According to the police, the deceased, Linda Atieno, who was a Form three student at Ochieng'a Secondary, was murdered by a man suspected to be her boyfriend.

The suspect, Pascal Ochieng, 23, is in police custody after he handed himself over to the police.

Confirming the incident to the press on Thursday, the area police boss Johanna Chebii said the girl died while undergoing treatment at Odede dispensary.

“The information we got from eyewitnesses indicate that the suspect went to the girl’s home at around 9pm when he asked to see her,” said Chebii.

He added that the suspect strangled the deceased before cutting her with a machete immediately she stepped outside the house.

According to sources, the deceased was in the company of her mother and sister when the incident happened. They raised alarm prompting attention from the villagers who came and rushed her to the hospital.

“We have not yet established what could have caused the murder but we are highly suspecting that it could be a love gone sour,” said the OCPD.

The police boss on that note appealed to the public to consider exploiting conflict resolution mechanisms whenever they have differences instead of resorting to acts that are criminal.

The body of the deceased was taken to Madiany hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting postmortem.
