The thought of waking up to the smell of raw sewage is not pleasing to anyone. However, this is what some residents of Garissa County are undergoing.
The residents of Bulla Sheikh Village are not a happy lot as they have had to put up with the stench of raw sewage right outside their houses.
The sewer line in the area has been broken for a month and has made a lot of residents reside to other areas.
On Friday, the residents held a protest where they demanded the sewer be reconstructed as they feared contracting waterborne diseases.
The Garissa Water and Sewerage Company managing director, Abdi Haji asked residents to be patient as the company was working towards solving the problem.
“The raw sewage poses a great danger to young children who play near sewers and eat food from vendors nearby,” said one of the area resident.
The reason for the breakage of the line is being pinned on the growing population in the area. This has made it too overwhelming.
“The sewer system was constructed in 1980. The population has grown since then. We need to overhaul the system,” said another resident.
The residents have now been asked to wait for 18 months by the Northern Water Board Services until the problem is solved.
