Addressing journalists in Nakuru on Wednesday, the branch executive secretary, Njau Kuria, said the move by the government to abolish the ranking system will hinder competition in schools.

Njau said ranking is part of evaluation and that is why it is done  in the case of internal examinations.

He noted that abolishing of ranking system will not solve the problem of cheating at all, terming the move as hypocrisy on the government’s side.

''Ranking used to assist parents determine which schools to take their children to,” he said.

“Further, teachers will be demoralised as non-performing and performing teachers will not be recognised.”

Njau further noted that previously, it was easy to motivate best performing teachers, thus improving standards of education.

On school fees structure, Njau said that KNUT is in support of the 2014 revised structure as recommended by a special task force formed last year.
