A section of Mombasa residents and followers of Governor Ali Hassan Joho have expressed mixed reactions after he left the country for Spain.

Is there a story unfolding in your community? Let Hivisasa know

He left the county on Wednesday for an investor meeting where he had a fruitful engagement with the Secretary of State of the Spanish Government, Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Environment Ms. Maria Garcia and the Director General for Water Mrs. Liana in Madrid.

Spain is one of the leading Countries globally with sustainable desalination technologies.

Joho's trip to Spain sought to advance plans and funding to build two desalination plants in Mombasa, to bridge the gap between water demand and supply that currently stands at 70 percent.

One plant will be built in Likoni projected to produce 30,000 cubic metres a day and another in Shimo La Tewa to produce 100,000 cubic metres per day, effectively ending the perennial water problem in the county.

Below are the reactions following his trip:

But why desalination when coast has several fresh water rivers all draining into the Indian Ocean? Isathrow. Nigutee

Hongera that my Governor and I can't regret for voting for you,

Abdi Hassan

Desalination plants are very expensive to operate and maintain. I suggest the County makes a thorough review of alternative options before riding into this idea

Simon Nyambu Mjomba

Water. We need it bad! Yenyewe the idea is grand, but vis â vis KPLC's high power tariffs, we are romanticizing here. Outages are still here with us.There are times the utility firm has threatened (the government) with disconnections owing to unpaid bills running in the millions. Here is to more bills that I bet the county government will heap.

Again, when it comes to billing: it might, I don't know, prove tad expensive by the gallon as compared to our good old Mzima-sourced. And in the collecting of those bills? Or maybe we are being too cynical. We have need for a waste management plant.

We can't run from this fact. Garbage heaps are an eyesore, and in a resort town like Mombasa?! Not acceptable. Staying objective.

Everything good is always welcome! The challenge has been unit cost of production. Kplc has the highest prices of power.
