Livestock farmers from Nyamira County have been urged to rear a regulated number of livestock in order to reduce the number of livestock dying of starvation.
Speaking on Thursday at Nyaramba area during free veterinary services courtesy of Nyamira County Government, Chief Veterinary officer Dr. Isaiah Ondigi urged farmers to rear a small number of livestock that can be controlled for high yields.
He said many farmers were rearing up to ten animals in a very small piece of land, making it impossible to sustain them hence leading to a high number of calamities.
“When venturing into this business, you ought to be careful, rear animals in relation to the piece of land and other essential resources. There is no need of rearing up to ten animals without giving them essential services such as veterinary services,” he said.
He urged residents to de-worm their livestock and consult vet nary officers constantly in order to increase yields.
“De-worming g is an essential service when it comes to livestock. You have to be in touch always with a vet so that can improve yields,” he added.
He asked dairy farmers to give their animals enough feed besides minimizing the number of cows reared so that to be relevant in dairy farming.
“Those who rear cows must be very cautious. The higher the number, the more resources you use. Consequently, when venturing into the business, ensure you do a lot of consultation,” advised the vet.
More than 500 farmers benefited from the initiative and hailed the county leadership for its generosity towards livestock farming.
