The mere mention of the name evokes fear upon any Kenyan. When it is not busy claiming lives through road carnage then it is up to some fishy engagements with sexual escapades.

But it is for the former that the 5 km stretch along the Eldoret-Nakuru highway is popular. So why is Salgaa a highway of death to many a passenger?

This is what residents interviewed had to say.

Evil Spirits

"I have had drivers complaining of seeing imaginary people at night on the stretch and when they try to evade them the result will always be catastrophic," Luke Kibet said.

Kibet further admits that the drivers' position could be true going by the several souls that have been lost in the area some of which he says could be out to exact revenge.

Immorality

"Nothing could be further from the truth. This place is the mother and father of all kind of immorality. From drunkenness to casual sex. No wonder accidents are common," Mary Bosibori said.

According to her, the notorious black spot is reaping the fruits of perpetuating evil. Her solution to the whole crisis is cut.

"Prayers and fasting is the way to go.Otherwise tears will continue to flow",she says.

Free wheeling.

Drivers have been accused of choosing to take a free roll down the stretch in a bid to save a little fuel.

"Most drivers always free wheel due to the sloppy nature of the stretch so as not to consume fuel," a resident who only identified himself as Daniel claimed.

At least to most residents living in Salgaa these are the major cause of concern. Already over 20 lives have been lost this year.
