Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren has urged the National government to stop any plans of importing maize from neighbouring Uganda.
The Jubilee MP who has been branded a rebel said the government should use the funds to pay farmers who delivered their maize to National Cereals and Produce Board 9NCPB) and are yet to be paid.
"I am really disappointed with the Jubilee administration for wanting to import maize from Uganda and yet farmers owe NCPB over Sh3 billion. The government should instead use the funds to pay farmers," said the Moiben legislator in Eldoret town, Saturday.
"I shall be petitioning the Ministry of Trade and Industrialization through the committee of Agriculture and Livestock on the matter. I will not allow farmers to suffer under my watch," he added.
The MP reiterated that the government should devise ways of lowering the cost of production and in return buy the produce at a considerable price.
"Our priority as a country should be on the Kenyan farmer first before sourcing the produce elsewhere, cushioning our farmers is key and should be taken seriously by the concerned ministry," he said.
"If we plan well as a country we can sustain our food security without looking beyond our borders, but if the farmer is neglected then one of the key pillars in Jubilee's Big Four Plan might not be achieved," added the MP who was stripped of the National Parliament Agriculture committee leadership for going against the party wishes.
